British Standards 8300 Drafting Panel
British Standards Institution. BS8300-1/2: Design of an accessible and inclusive building environment.
At 1828, we don’t just follow inclusive design standards—we help write them. As part of the drafting panel for the upcoming revision of BS8300: Design of an accessible and inclusive building environment, 1828 is contributing expert insight to one of the UK’s most important accessibility standards.
BS8300 defines what it means for the built environment to be accessible and inclusive—shaping guidance for everything from entrances, streets, and public realm to schools, healthcare spaces, housing, and cultural venues. This revision is a significant opportunity: it aims not only to update technical detail but to embed inclusive thinking more holistically, particularly by integrating neurodiversity and emerging priorities such as age, gender identity, belief, and maternity.
Our director, Jerome Tsui, is a member of the drawing panel, helping develop text, resolve comments, and align the standard with evolving best practice. This includes translating his insight from education, social housing, developing inclusive design frameworks and the PAS 6463 guidance into national recommendations.
1828 brings a unique strength to this work: our ability to bridge the technical and the human. We ensure that spatial strategies meet regulatory standards without losing sight of emotional ease, dignity, and independence. Being part of this national standard-making process means our team stays at the forefront of accessibility thinking—ensuring that every project we lead is shaped not only by what’s current, but by what’s next.
